Quick Tip for Whiter Looking Scleras!


   To make the scleras , or white part of your eyes appear whiter you can try a number of things, visine, drinking lots of water, getting plenty of rest or a navy blue eye pencil.  For the whiter and brighter eye effect,  apply some navy blue eye liner to your lower lash line. You can also put the liner and blue eyeshadow on the upper lash line to intensify the effect.  
  I have been using this little trick for years but never really knew why it was so effective.  So, I did a little research and found out that the sclera, which is an opaque, protective, outer layer of the eye, contains collagen and elastic fiber.  In children, the sclera is thinner therefore, revealing some of the underlying pigment, which causes it to appear slightly blue. In the elderly, however, fatty deposits on the sclera can make it appear slightly yellow.  
  My conclusion is that the blue pigmentation in a navy blue eye liner acts as a natural imitation of the effect of the slightly blue colorized scleras of younger children, causing the eye to appear brighter and whiter.  Another possible reason--Whenever a blue light is cast on a blue object it appears white so maybe having the blue liner near your eye, which contains an underlying blue pigmentation, has the same effect.  
  Whatever the case, the navy blue eye pencil trick works, try it and let us know what you think....

My Makeup Journey-Part 2

  I almost forgot to continue this series, which I started when I first began blogging not too long ago.  To be honest, I almost forgot to continue sharing this journey but, my recollections have been very therapeutic and sweet. 
  I've come to realize that I need to make an amendment to part one of this journey because elementary school is really where my journey began.  How could I forget the countless allowances and paychecks (yes, I had my first job in sixth grade) spent mostly on Avon and BonneBell's Lip Smackers (Dr. Pepper, Bubble Gum and Strawberry were my faves).  Now that I think of it, I became enthralled with all things beauty-related at a very young age.  I was not allowed to wear makeup in elementary school but I was allowed to wear nearly clear lip balms and glosses such as Lip Smackers, clear and nude coloured nail polish and "age appropiate" fragrances.  I don't  remember the name of my only permitted fragrance when I was a little girl, but as I got a little older, I was allowed to wear perfumed skin softeners.  Oh how I looked forward to getting my little Avon catalogue at school each week (one of the teacher's assistants was an Avon representive).  I would place my order almost immediately and anticipate the delivery of my products with glee--Okay I know that sounds cheesy but, I was just a young girl then         ( filled with glee :D ).   My usual order consisted of nail polishes, Flavor Savers Lip Gloss in Strawberry and Bubble Gum, perfumed skin softeners, my favorite Dew Kiss Lip Dew, and etc.  I remember how moisturizing and delicious smelling the Flavor Saver Glosses were and how soft the perfumed fragrances left my skin.   Out of all the countless lip products I've tried from Avon, the Dew Kiss Lip Dew was my favorite because not only was it very moisturizing, it had a more mature smell. It wasn't the usual fruity scent that I was accustomed to wearing, so it made me feel grown up--like a teenager.  I haven't ordered anything from Avon in years but, I went to the website and was delighted to see that some of my childhood favorites were still there and at even lower prices than I remember.  Now I just have to find a representative in my area because I am so getting some Lip Smackers and Dew Kiss Lip Dew. 



  Hopefully many of you fellow cosmetic connoisseurs (I refuse to label us as junkies or addicts :D ) will be able to relate to my early explorations and experiments that have guided me to the place I am today--a lover and lifelong student of all things beauty-related.

Dare to Be Different!

Are you tired of playing games, wearing masks or trying to be someone other than yourself? Wouldn't you like the freedom to just be accepted for who you are, without the pressure to be someone you really don't know how to be? Would you like to learn how to embrace your uniqueness and resist the pull to be like everyone else? God knew what He was doing when He made you. You are a unique individual—God created you the way you are! It's time that we dare to accept ourselves as different and stop being insecure about who we are.

If you’re going to overcome insecurities and be the person God’s called you to be, you must have the courage to be different. Unhappiness and frustration happen when we reject our uniqueness and try to be like each other. If you’re going to be successful at being completely you, then you’re going to have to take a chance on not being like everyone else. You must ask yourself, Am I a people pleaser or a God pleaser?

Becoming a people pleaser is one of the easiest things we can do...but it can ultimately make us very unhappy. When we begin pleasing others, we begin to hear comments that make us feel good about ourselves. That’s okay as long as we don't derive our sense of worth from it. People are too fickle for us to place our sense of worth in their opinions. We’re worth something because God says we're worth something—not because of what people think or say about us.

M.A.C's Plush Lash Review

   Since my post schedule for this week is all jacked up anyway, I will save my fashion post for tomorrow, I think.  
  I have never been a fan of M.A.C's mascaras, I've always preferred Lancome's but, after hearing a positive review about their Plush Lash mascara, I decided to give it a go.   I was very skeptical at first, because of my previous bad experiences with their mascaras, but after putting it on, I was quite impressed.  It was very pigmented, it stretched my lashes out, and gave them volume.  I only used one coat and I was amazed at how good it looked.  I tried another coat just to see if it would clump and it didn't; instead,  it was buildable and very easy to work with.   I wanted to wear it for a few hours to test it before I got too excited and shared it with you, and I am happy to report, it passed the test.  It didn't flake, smudge or transfer, it was long-wearing yet, very easy to remove with makeup wipes.
  I highly recommend this mascara, it is very comparable to Lancome's Amplicil mascara (which is discontinued) and that says alot.

M.A.C Style Black

 The Style Black Collection is another collection by M.A.C that I have really been looking forward to because I love to style it black with my wardrobe and accessories.  In fact until about 2 years ago, I have been styling it black almost everyday.   My mother and aunts used to try and encourage me to wear more vibrant colors but I made black my signature color instead.  It got so bad that my mom asked me if I was in mourning and my answer was no, I explained to her that I just wanted to make sure people could see my makeup.
  So, honestly I didn't know what to expect with this collection.  Though I like black, I've never thought about wearing black lipstick and except for Elvira, I hadn't paid too much attention to this lip trend and was never interested before but, the artist in me was intrigued.  
  I have to say after seeing the collection, I was pleasantly surprised.  I knew that if I didn't like anything else, I would like the mattene lipstick in Night Violet.  Night Violet was already on my list of must-haves and I considered the grease paintstick, which is long-wearing, transfer resistant and waterproof.  I think this paintstick will be perfect for smokey eye looks.  I figured I'd be attracted to the mineralize eyeshadows and they are all gorgeous like I expected but, I really don't have a negative thing to say about any of the items in the collection so far.  
  I can't imagine wearing black lipstick alone but, I can imagine it would work well to deepen lighter colored lipsticks.  I really like the glimmerglasses, they aren't overwhelmingly black, they have just a hint of noir.  I am looking forward to trying a look with some of the products from this collection soon...

Quick Tip: DIY Glowing Skin

   One of my favorite at-home beauty treatments to use during the fall and winter months only requires two ingredients:                                  
        (milk)+ (green tea)


This treatment gives my skin an instant pick-me-up and an incredible glow.
 

  First, boil one half cup of water, place your tea bag in a cup or bowl of the hot water and let it steep.  Next, pour a one-fourth cup of ice cold milk in a medium-sized bowl and soak your washcloth.  Wring out some of the excess milk and lay the washcloth on your face for about five minutes while lying down.  Next, take another washcloth and soak it in the green tea (it should be very warm to touch, but bearable).  Wring out the excess tea and lay the washcloth on your face while lying down for about five minutes.  Finally, rinse your face with ice cold water to close your pores.
  This works really well to give your skin a healthy glow because of the change from cold to hot and then cold again.  The temperature changes cause your blood to circulate, which causes the afterglow.  Protein, which is  found in the milk, is necessary for repairing skin tissue and constructing new tissue.  Antioxidants, which are found in the green tea, help neutralize the skin damage that might have occurred as a result of exposure to free radicals.  Antioxidants also help prevent and repair fine lines and wrinkles.
P.S.  For best results, please make sure to cleanse your skin prior to the treatment.

Quick Tip--How to Make Your Lip Colour Last!

  I normally post quick tips on Tuesdays but I have something special planned for tomorrow's post so I switched it up a little bit.
  If you want to make sure that your lip colour lasts all day one technique is to get a lip pencil in a shade closest to the color of your lips, line your lips with the pencil and then fill in your lips completely with the same lip pencil.  Next add your lipstick or lipgloss and your lip colour will stay put for hours.
  This technique is great for those of us that are always on the go and don't have time to touch up our lips every thirty minutes.

A Balanced Look at Submission to Authority

  Maintaining balance in every area of our life is very important. I believe it is a major key to
walking in victory. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8, Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be
vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion
roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. Satan cannot devour anyone
he pleases. He can only gain access to those who are out of balance—living their life at one
extreme or another.
  I believe that one of the most important areas for us to be balanced in is our understanding of
submission to authority. Believe it or not, all authority is instituted by God. In fact, it is His will that
you and I submit to the people He has placed over us. Romans 13:1 says, Let every person be
loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His
permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God’s appointment.
In most cases, when you and I choose to go against authority and do our own thing, we are
actually rebelling against God. As a result we give Satan an opportunity to bring problems into our
life. However, there are times when our submission can actually become enslavement to someone
else’s manipulation and control. This too opens the door to the attack of the enemy. In order to
avoid this, I believe we need to have a balanced understanding of submission to authority—
knowing when to submit and when not to.

A Small Confession and Announcements

  Okay I have a small confession.  Finding sales and the best deals has never been my forté and I have struggled every Saturday--sighs! (okay now I am being a bit dramatic;D)  Seriously, all I keep running across is the same old clearances--blah blah blah.  I want to present something fresh and exciting but I think that I am going to have to change things up a bit.  Maybe on Saturdays I can share highlights of the week or maybe I can share special announcements.  What do you think?

Quick Fashion Flash!

   I thought it would be most appropiate to give at least a mini review of the happenings on the runways of New York Fashion Week for Spring 2010.  As you might already know I am not a huge fan of spring or summer fashion but I am a fan of art and self expression so I was excited to see what each designer would come up with.
Side Bar:  There are some trends that I really like so every year I cross my fingers in hopes that they will be revisited on the runway--i.e. leggings and ballet flats.  I am confident that the wrap dress is here to stay and I will be rockin' it in my nineties with my Christian Louboutins :D
  What I like about where fashion is going right now is that it is becoming more and more wearable and that's what makes todays' runway shows so inspiring.  Many of the designs on the runway for Spring 2010 were easily translated for ready-to-wear therefore, I didn't view most collections as inaccessible works of art like I have in the past.  Instead, I actually visualized myself in some of the apparel and all of the necessary accoutrements.
  At the risk of sounding cliché, there was something for everyone at Fashion Week.  It's always interesting to find out the inspiration behind each designers' showcase.  For Spring 2010 get ready for looks inspired by nature, the 20's, the 30's, the 50's, rock, the circus and even the recession.  There will be lots of whimsy, fluid silhouettes, and pops of color in accessories, muted colors, neon colors and metallic embellishments. 

  However, with fall right around the corner I can't help but get anxious to pull out all of my classic fall/winter articles of clothing and accessories.  I reviewed my fall/winter trend notes and to my liking, I stumbled upon a trend that I'd forgottten about--it's a recycled trend but, hot nonetheless.  I present to you:  The Biker Brigade Trend:

Long Overdue Haul/Review!

    The Make-up Art collection has garnered lots of excitement and praise from many in the beauty community because of its wide spectrum of colors and artsy appeal. I had to see the collection in person before I shared my opinion, I also wanted to try each shade and without emotion take in all of the colors and vibrance that has sparked so much applause from beauty insiders.   I wanted to know if it was just hype or if this collection was truly one to write home about.  
  I was quite impressed with this collection, mostly because there was something for everyone.  It was so easy for me to just splurge and get every item but after looking at my budget, I decided to only purchase items that I knew I would use.  In the past I have purchased cosmetic products based on emotion rather than logic and the items ended up collecting dust.  Therefore, I didn't purchase any technakohl liners and they were hard to say no to because they are so vibrant and pretty.  I really had to talk myself out of those liners and just thinking about them makes me want to go back to my local M.A.C to salvage what's left.  
Oftentimes I will go to M.A.C and wander around the store and discover something in the permanent collection even though I planned to only focus on items from the newest collection.  This was one of those times because it seems like a new collection is released so quickly that I don't get a chance to give any attention to items that I desire in the permanent collection.
  Also there were some items that I didn't think I would like until I tried them on.  The Off the Page and Purple Shower eye shadows were two items that I tried on and couldn't walk away from.  The Notable blush was another surprise purchase.  I read other reviews about this blush and they weren't favorable but, I am so glad that I tried it for myself.  
  
So let's start with the eye shadows:


From left to right: Violet Trance (Matte), Purple Shower (Satin), Haunting (Satin), Off The Page (Frost)

I really prefer matte eye shadows even though they are difficult to work with sometimes.  I really like Violet Trance but I had to really pack the color on to see the intensity of the color.  I think
Violet Trance will work really well for a smokey eye look.
Purple Shower (not to be mistaken for Purple Rain :D --sorry I couldn't resist) is very pretty it is a pinkish lilac hue and on me it looked more matte than satin.
Haunting is very pretty and reminds me of Aquadisiac and Too Dolly eye shadows by M.A.C.  It is a very light turquoise and looks more matte than satin on my skin.  What I like about this eye shadow is that it is very pigmented which means it takes less time to apply.  Time saving is a huge plus!
I couldn't walk away from Off The Page, it commanded my attention with its vibrance and intensity.  This eye shadow is also very pigmented.  Surprisingly enough it was my favorite eye shadow in this collection even though I am not a huge fan of orange.

Now on to the pigments:

 Cocomotion is a goldish light cocoa frost and it is one of those colors that you have to try on to really appreciate.  
My favorite of the pigments is the Brash & Bold because it is rich pink and gorgeous.  In this case, the name really fits the description of this fuschia pigment. Even if you aren't a pink fan, if you can find this pigment,  please try it on, give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.
Heritage Rouge was one of those items that I didn't think I would like but after trying it on, I couldn't resist it.  it is absolutely beautiful.  I thought it reminded me of M.A.C's eye shadow in Cranberry but after comparing them side by side, I found that Heritage Rouge was deeper and richer in color.
I liked Push The Edge at first glance, it looked very familiar to me and after getting home I realized it looks almost identical to M.A.C Pro's pigment in Grape.  I am not disappointed because Grape pigment is my favorite pigment so I will not complain.

Pictured below is a glitter from the collection in Fuchsia:

I really like this glitter and am looking forward to wearing it but, it looks more purple than fuchsia in my opinion.

I normally gravitate towards sheertone blushes because I tend to put most of the color focus on my eyes or lips.  Every now and then I like to have a little more color on my cheeks and this blush was absolutely perfect for a little more and not too much.  I wasn't even considering this blush after reading a negative review on it but right before paying for my purchases I tried it on and it instantly added a glow.  I hope M.A.C makes this blush permanent because I never want to be without it.  Whether you like a light wash of color or more on the cheeks, this blush is definitely worth trying out, the color is very buildable but not over powering.
I intentionally placed the Full Body lipstick next to this blush so that you could see how compatible they are.  I purchased Full Body lipstick because I needed a dark lipstick for the fall and winter.  Full Body reminds me of a more sheer version of M.A.C's lipstick in Media.  When I put it on I immediately felt glamorous and that qualified this lipstick as a must have.
The lipstick pictured below is Rebel


Rebel is not a part of the Make-up Art collection but, it is a very sultry, rich berry pink shade.  This lipstick has a satin finish and is very pigmented so a little goes a long way.

Pictured below are a few pigments from the permanent collection that caught my eye.  From left to right: Golden Lemon, Melon, and Copper Sparkle.

 
My favorite of these is the Golden Lemon, it's a really pretty highlight color.  I have used Melon as a highlighter as well.  I originally planned to purchase the Reflects Copper glitter from the Make-up Art collection but it didn't look like copper so I picked Copper Sparkle because it is truly copper.

Spring/Summer 2010 Color Trend

  If you've read any of my Friday fashion posts, you know my fashion philosophy.  I believe in wearing styles that complement you the best no matter what the trend is.  I like styles that are classic and transcend time therefore, I am not obligated to trends.  However, if I like a particular trend I will definitely  customize it to fit my lifestyle and body type and rock it.

  When it comes to weddings, I believe the style of the bridal gown and bridesmaids' dresses should be timeless.  Some brides throw caution to the wind and go with whatever the current trend is; which to some degree, it probably doesn't matter because most trends are just recycled.
  If you are getting married spring or summer 2010 and you want to go with the trend, throw away those ideas of a pastel palette because the bolder the better' is the resounding theme.  It's all about bold colors for spring and summer weddings-- hot pink, turquoise, and bright orange are some of the popular accessory colors.    
  Even though bright colors are in,  the black wedding gown is still one of the top trends.   
 Bright red wedding gowns are also very popular and have been seen on the runways of europe.

Quick Tip: DIY Peachy Treatment!

 

 Vitamin C is very good for your skin for many different reasons.  It is an antioxidant and wrinkle inhibitor, so you can look for products that contain vitamin C or just use a peach.  
  First, mash the flesh of a ripened peach and apply it to your face and neck.  Next lie down for about 10 minutes and then rinse your face well. This treatment will leave your face feeling soft and supple.  Try this treatment at least once a week and you will notice an even greater improvement over time.

  One of the most freeing things that I have learned in my years of walking with the Lord is how to
break free from being a people pleaser. Now, I am not talking about living a healthy, unselfish life
where we make the needs of others a priority. I am talking about a pressure to perform—an
unhealthy drive to be accepted and approved by others. It is a desire so strong that it influences and
controls the majority of our decisions.
  There are some individuals who have spent a good part of their lives trying to please other people,
and as a result, they are unhappy, bitter, resentful and depressed. How other people think and feel
about them has become so important that it is like an addiction affecting every part of who they are.
  The real tragedy is they don’t know what is causing the problem.
  How can you and I know if we are a people pleaser? There are some key signs that we want to
take a look at. If you and I are not supposed to live to please people, who are we supposed to live to
please?

Sales and Such III

 

   Okay so after a long day at the zoo Thursday and the circus on Friday, I will have to keep this short :D   I need to reserve a little energy for Saturday cleaning--whoot whoot!  
  Many of the stores still have really good markdowns on their spring and summer merchandise so I am kind of tempted to break my Saturday cleaning schedule to go and see if I can find a good deal or two---no no I must stay focused.
  I found a couple of good deals at Ulta.com.  Vitabath products are marked down significantly and they have $3.50 off any $10.00 online purchase.

  I found a great deal on ON10 cosmetics lip balms and candles...I need this one now:Hershey's Sweet Milk Chocolate Lip Balm SPF 15Yum!  I wonder if this lip balm will cure my chocolate cravings or make them more frequent....

Tootsie Pop Delicious Lip Balm SPF 15I might have to get the tootsie pop one also.  

Both lip balms are on sale for $5.00.  I think these would make great stocking stuffers.
